How to find competitors' winning ads for free
Where to see competitors' video ads in Meta Ad Library and TikTok Creative Center, how to tell which ones are working, and a weekly routine to log them.
You find a competitor's ads in the platforms' own free libraries: Meta Ad Library for Facebook and Instagram, and TikTok Creative Center for TikTok. Neither shows sales, so you judge an ad by what the advertiser does with it: how long it stays live, how many copies of it run, and whether new versions of the same idea keep appearing. This article covers where to look, what to read as a signal, and a routine for a weekly review.
Meta Ad Library
The Meta Ad Library contains every ad that is active on Meta's apps, and Meta's help page says anyone can view and search it. If an ad has age-restricted content, such as alcohol, the creative is hidden until you log in.
To search it:
- Pick the country in the selector at the top left. Results are per country, so pick the market you sell in.
- Set the ad category to "All ads".
- Type a brand's name to see the active ads from its Page, or type a keyword. Meta says a keyword search returns ads that include the term and ads run by Pages that include it, so "collagen powder" brings up advertisers you had not listed.
- Open "Filters". The options are language, advertiser, platform (Facebook, Instagram, Audience Network, Messenger, WhatsApp, Threads), media type, active status and a date range for impressions. Set media type to "Videos". With that filter on, the keyword is matched against the video's transcript as well as the ad copy.
On a keyword search, the "Sort by" menu has two options: "Impressions: high to low" and "Most recent". Meta shows no impression numbers for commercial ads, so use the first as a rough order and nothing more.
Each result card carries the facts you need:
- "Started running on" and a date. This is when that ad went live.
- "Platforms", the icons of the apps where it runs.
- "N ads use this creative and text". Click "See summary details" and Meta explains it: advertisers often use the same image or video and text to create campaigns with different start dates, locations or budgets. Each of those ads is listed with its own start date.
- "This ad has multiple versions". Open "See ad details" and you can page through them ("1 of 3").
The library has one place where a result is shown. For ads that deliver to the EU or the United Kingdom, Meta displays the dates the ad ran, the targeting the advertiser chose (age, gender, location) and the ad's total reach there, and keeps the ad for one year after its last impression. If your competitor sells in Germany or France, switch the country and open the ad's details. Elsewhere, Meta's help page promises only the active ads.
TikTok Creative Center top ads
TikTok's Top Ads dashboard works differently. It is not a full archive. TikTok describes it as a collection of high-performing ads, and its one-page guide says an ad appears only if it meets performance thresholds and the advertiser has authorised it. Your competitor may not be there, so use it to study the category and not one brand.
According to TikTok's help article, you go to Creative Center, log in, click "Inspiration" and choose "Top Ads". Log in first: without it you see only five ads. Then:
- Filter by region, industry, campaign objective, likes and time frame. On desktop you also get ad language and ad format.
- Sort by reach, click-through rate, 2-second view rate or 6-second view rate. Desktop adds conversion rate and likes.
- Search by product or keyword.
- Click "See analytics" on an ad. TikTok's guide shows likes, comments and shares, the click-through rate as a percentile ("Top 10%") and the budget as a level ("High"), not as amounts. Below is a second-by-second graph, indexed 0 to 100, of where in the video the chosen metric peaked.
That graph tells you which second of the ad earned the clicks, which is what you need when you later break the ad down.
Two more free sources
TikTok Commercial Content Library. This is TikTok's transparency archive. Its FAQ says it covers ads that ran in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Turkey, kept for one year after they were last shown, and that you do not need a TikTok account. You choose a target country, then search by advertiser name or keyword. Each result shows the first shown date, the last shown date and "Unique users seen" as a range, such as 1K-10K. It has no data for ads shown only in the United States.
Google Ads Transparency Center. For YouTube, Google's center lets you search by advertiser name or website and filter by date, region, platform and format. Google's policy page describes it as a searchable repository of the ads advertisers have served on Search, Display, Gmail and YouTube. For certain countries, Google says it also shows targeting information and the total number of recipients of each ad. Elsewhere you get the creative and the date it last ran.
| Source | What it covers | What it tells you about results |
|---|---|---|
| Meta Ad Library | All active ads on Meta's apps, per country | Start date, copies of the same creative, versions. Reach for ads delivered to the EU and UK |
| TikTok Top Ads | High-performing ads whose advertisers allowed it | Likes, comments, shares, click-through percentile, budget level, second-by-second graph |
| TikTok Commercial Content Library | Ads shown in the EEA, UK, Switzerland and Turkey | First and last shown dates, unique users in ranges |
| Google Ads Transparency Center | Ads served on Google's platforms, including YouTube | Last date shown. Number of recipients in certain countries |
Signals that an ad is winning
None of the following is proof. Each is something an advertiser tends to do only with an ad that pays for itself, and they are stronger together.
It has run for a long time
Read the "Started running on" date. An advertiser who watches return on spend switches off what loses money, so a video still active many weeks after launch has survived several reviews. There is no official threshold. Compare within the brand: scroll to its oldest ads that are still live. Be careful with large brands, which leave awareness ads on for reasons that have nothing to do with sales.
Several ads use the same creative
"5 ads use this creative and text" means the advertiser put the same video into several campaigns, with different start dates, locations or budgets. Open the summary. If the start dates are spread over months, the advertiser kept coming back to it.
New versions of the same hook keep appearing
Scroll the brand's Page results and look for videos that open the same way: the same first line with a different person, the same first shot with a different caption. When a team makes a fourth version of an opening, the first three taught them something. This is the strongest signal, because it costs the advertiser production money.
It runs in more than one place
Check the platform icons, then change the country. A concept that runs on Facebook and Instagram, appears in TikTok's library, and has been translated for a second market has been judged worth spreading.
The platform shows a number
Where there is one, use it: reach in the EU and UK on Meta, the unique-users range on TikTok's library, the click-through percentile on Top Ads. A high percentile on a "High" budget says more than the same percentile on a low one.
A weekly competitor review
Do this on the same day each week. What you are looking for is change, and you only see change against last week's notes.
- Keep a list of five to ten advertisers: your direct competitors and two or three brands in nearby categories that sell to the same buyer.
- Open each one in Meta Ad Library with the country set to your market, active ads, videos only.
- Note what is new since last week and what has disappeared. An ad that vanished within days was probably switched off for a reason.
- Find the oldest active videos and the ones with the most copies. Open their details.
- Run two or three category keywords to catch advertisers that are not on your list.
- Open TikTok Top Ads, filter to your region and industry and the last 30 days, sort by click-through rate, and open the analytics of anything in your category.
- If you sell in Europe, check the same brands in TikTok's Commercial Content Library and read the reach ranges.
- Log every ad that shows two or more signals. Most weeks that is one to three ads.
What to save and write down
Ads leave the libraries. Outside the EU and UK, Meta's help page commits only to showing active ads, so an ad you saw last week may be gone. Save the link and the Library ID on the day you find it, and make a screen recording of the video for your own reference. The recording is for study. It is not material for your own ad.
Keep one row per ad in a spreadsheet:
| Field | What to write |
|---|---|
| Advertiser, link, Library ID | So you can find it again |
| Start date and date seen | The age of the ad on the day you logged it |
| Copies and versions | The numbers Meta shows, and how the versions differ |
| Platforms and countries | Where you found it running |
| Format | Talking head, voiceover with product shots, demonstration, testimonial montage |
| Length | In seconds |
| Hook | The first line word for word, and what is on screen in the first three seconds |
| Structure | The order of the parts: problem, product, how to use, proof, ask |
| Offer | Discount, bundle, guarantee, free shipping, and when in the video it appears |
| Signals | Which of the five above it shows |
After a month, sort the sheet by format and by hook. You will see what your category rewards: the same opening used by three brands, or a length that every long-running ad shares. For how hooks are built, see video ad hooks, and for the parts of the structure, the anatomy of a winning UGC ad.
What to do with a winner
A logged winner is a tested structure. What you take from it is its order, its timing and its kinds of shot. The footage, the person, the voice, the music, the logo and the claims stay with the advertiser. The method for rebuilding it for your product, beat by beat, is in how to replicate a competitor's ad. You can do it by hand with a creator or a shoot. ReplicateAds does the same thing from the ad's link and your product page, with every frame generated new.
Questions
Can you see how much a competitor spends on a Meta ad?
Not for an ordinary commercial ad. Meta's Ad Library shows a range of spend only for ads about social issues, elections or politics. For ads delivered to the EU or the United Kingdom it shows total reach and the targeting the advertiser chose, which is the closest you get to a result.
Do you need an account to use Meta Ad Library?
No. Meta says anyone can view and search it. You need to be logged in to see the creative of age-restricted ads, such as alcohol or gambling, and to download a search.
Does TikTok have an ad library?
It has two. Creative Center's Top Ads is a collection of high-performing ads whose advertisers allowed them to be shown, with engagement metrics. The Commercial Content Library is the transparency archive for ads shown in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Turkey, searchable by advertiser name.
How do you know a competitor's ad is winning?
You cannot know for certain, because the libraries do not show sales. The useful signs are an ad that is still active weeks after it started, several ads that use the same creative, new versions of the same opening, and the same concept running on more than one platform or country. Two or more signs together are worth acting on.
